Combine the soy sauce, mirin, sake, and sugar in a small saucepan over medium heat, stirring until the sugar dissolves completely.
Bring the mixture to a gentle boil, then reduce the heat to medium-low and simmer, stirring occasionally, until the sauce has reduced by about one-third and coats the back of a spoon with a thin, glossy layer, 15 to 18 minutes.
