In a small bowl, combine the chili powder, smoked paprika, ground cumin, salt, and black pepper. Sprinkle the spice mixture evenly over both sides of the cod fillets, pressing gently so it adheres.
Heat 1 tbsp of the avocado oil in a 12-inch skillet over medium-high heat until shimmering. Add the cod fillets and sear undisturbed for 3–4 minutes, until the underside is golden and releases easily from the pan. Flip and cook for 2–3 minutes more, until the fish reaches an internal temperature of 145°F (63°C) on an instant-read thermometer and is opaque throughout. Transfer the fillets to a plate and set aside.
