Fresh strawberries and fragrant basil come together in a homemade syrup that turns a simple pitcher of black tea into something genuinely special. The syrup is cooked low and slow until the berries release their deep pink juices, then the basil steeps right into the warm liquid, layering in a herbal note that feels sophisticated without being fussy. Everything gets strained smooth, combined with brewed tea, and chilled until cold — the kind of drink that looks like it came from a fancy café but costs a fraction of the price to make at home. Lupin, which can sneak into all kinds of packaged beverages and flavored syrups as a filler or thickener, is simply never part of the picture here — every ingredient is whole and straightforward. Maple syrup steps in as the sweetener, giving the drink a subtle warmth that pairs beautifully with the bright berry flavor. Serve it over a tall glass of ice with a sprig of basil on top and it's instantly the most impressive thing on the table.

Bring 4 cups of water to a boil in a medium saucepan over high heat. Remove from the heat, add the tea bags, and steep for 5 minutes. Remove and discard the tea bags, then set the brewed tea aside to cool slightly.
While the tea steeps, combine the halved strawberries, maple syrup, and 1/2 cup water in the same saucepan (or a second small saucepan) over medium heat. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the strawberries have softened and released their juices and the liquid is a deep pink, about 8 minutes.
