Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9-inch round cake pan or 8Ć8-inch baking pan with coconut oil and line the bottom with parchment paper.
Place the chopped dates in a medium bowl. Pour the boiling water over them, stir in the baking soda, and let the mixture sit for 10 minutes until the dates are very soft and beginning to break down.
