Asparagus has a way of making any plate look effortless, and this preparation leans into that with nothing but good technique and a few pantry staples. The spears are steamed right in a skillet until they're just tender and brilliantly green, then finished with a drizzle of nutty brown butter that transforms a simple vegetable into something genuinely craveable. Brown butter is one of those small kitchen moves that delivers enormous flavor — rich, toasty, and almost caramel-like — without any complicated steps or hard-to-source ingredients. Fresh parsley brightens everything up, and a little thyme adds an herby note that feels right at home alongside the buttery richness. Because the ingredient list is so clean and straightforward, there's no need to scan labels or second-guess anything — just fresh asparagus, real butter, salt, and herbs. It comes together in minutes and works beautifully as a side for weeknight dinners or something a little more special.

Arrange the asparagus in a single layer in a large skillet. Add enough cold water to reach about 1/4 inch up the sides of the pan. Cover and bring to a boil over medium-high heat, then steam for 3–5 minutes, until the spears are bright green and just tender when pierced at the thickest point with a paring knife — they should bend slightly but not flop.
Transfer the asparagus to a serving platter using tongs and discard the steaming water. Pat the skillet dry or use a separate small light-colored saucepan for the butter.
