Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the ground beef and cook, breaking it apart with a wooden spoon, until browned and no pink remains, about 6–7 minutes. Tilt the pan and spoon off all but about 1 tbsp of the rendered fat.
Add the onion to the skillet and cook, stirring occasionally, until softened and translucent, about 3–4 minutes. Add the garlic and cook, stirring constantly, until fragrant, about 1 minute.
