Combine the warm water and yeast in the bowl of a stand mixer (or a large mixing bowl) and let stand for 5 minutes, until foamy and fragrant.
Add the sugar, salt, milk, and beaten egg to the yeast mixture and stir to combine. Add the softened butter and 2 cups of the flour. Mix on low speed with the dough hook (or beat with a hand mixer) until a shaggy dough forms, about 1 minute.
