Bright, jammy, and bursting with fruit flavor, this berry compote is the kind of simple sauce that makes everything it touches taste more special. Blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, and blackberries simmer down with honey and fresh lemon juice into something deeply fruity and just sweet enough. A touch of Ceylon cinnamon and ground ginger add warmth and complexity without overpowering the natural berry flavor — and crucially, the spice blend stops right there, making this a completely nutmeg-free option for anyone who needs to avoid it. That matters more than you might think, since many spiced fruit sauces and store-bought compotes sneak in nutmeg as a background note. Here, every ingredient is intentional and visible, so there are no surprises. The optional arrowroot slurry is a smart trick if you want a glossier, thicker result — it pulls the whole thing together beautifully without changing the flavor. Spoon it warm over pancakes, yogurt, or ice cream, or jar it up and keep it in the fridge for the week ahead.

Combine the berries, honey, lemon juice, lemon zest, Ceylon cinnamon, and ginger in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Stir to coat the berries, then cook, stirring occasionally, until the berries begin to release their juices and the mixture comes to a gentle simmer, about 4–5 minutes.
Reduce the heat to medium-low and continue to cook, stirring occasionally and pressing some of the berries lightly against the side of the pan, until the compote has thickened slightly and the fruit is very soft and jammy, about 8–10 minutes. The sauce should coat the back of a spoon.
