Few cocktails feel as effortlessly elegant as a cold, frost-rimmed julep cup filled with crushed ice and the scent of fresh mint. This version keeps things beautifully simple β a homemade simple syrup, good bourbon, and gently muddled mint leaves are all it takes to nail the classic. Because everything here is made from scratch, you never have to second-guess what's hiding in a pre-made mixer or flavored syrup, which is a real relief when you're avoiding soy-based additives that sneak into a surprising number of bottled cocktail ingredients. The key move is muddling the mint just enough to bruise it without shredding it, which releases that bright, clean fragrance without turning bitter. Packing the ice high and stirring until the cup frosts over isn't just for show β it chills the drink properly and gives you that signature icy sip from the first taste to the last. A dusting of powdered sugar on the mint garnish is optional, but it adds a subtle sweetness and a little visual drama that makes the whole thing feel like a proper occasion.
