Few drinks are as refreshing or as steeped in tradition as this classic Southern cocktail. Fresh mint leaves are gently muddled with a homemade simple syrup β just sugar and water β so the drink picks up that cool, herbal fragrance without any bitterness. Bourbon goes in over a generous mound of crushed ice, and a quick stir frosts the outside of the cup in a way that feels genuinely satisfying to pull off. The whole thing comes together with a mint sprig tucked upright into the ice and an optional dusting of powdered sugar for a little old-school elegance. Every single ingredient here is straightforward and naturally free of warm spices, so there's no need to scrutinize labels or swap anything out. Whether you're serving a crowd on a warm afternoon or just treating yourself, this recipe is as clean and uncomplicated as a great cocktail should be.

Place the mint leaves in the bottom of a chilled julep cup or rocks glass. Add the simple syrup and muddle gently β press and twist the muddler 3β4 times just until the leaves are bruised and fragrant. Do not shred the leaves.
