Few cocktails are as refreshingly iconic as this Southern classic, and the good news is it's naturally free of any dairy β no substitutions needed, no label-reading required. Fresh mint leaves are muddled just enough to release their fragrant oils without turning bitter, then layered with a homemade simple syrup that takes only a few minutes on the stovetop. Packing the cup with crushed ice isn't just for looks β it chills the bourbon quickly and creates that gorgeous frosted exterior that signals a properly made julep. The ratio of syrup to spirit keeps things balanced, sweet but not cloying, with the mint doing the heavy lifting on aroma. A dusting of powdered sugar on the mint garnish is optional, but it adds a subtle finishing touch that makes the whole presentation feel special. Whether you're hosting a Derby party or just want something cold and elegant on a warm afternoon, this one delivers every time.

Combine the granulated sugar and water in a small saucepan over medium heat, stirring until the sugar is fully dissolved, about 2β3 minutes. Remove from heat and let cool to room temperature. (The syrup can be made ahead and refrigerated for up to 2 weeks.)
Place the mint leaves in the bottom of a chilled julep cup or rocks glass. Add the simple syrup and muddle gently β press and twist the muddler 3β4 times just until the leaves are bruised and fragrant. Do not shred the leaves.
