Few cocktails feel as effortlessly elegant as this Southern classic, and the good news is that every single ingredient here is completely clean and straightforward. Many store-bought cocktail syrups and pre-made mixes sneak in unexpected additives, but this one starts with a homemade simple syrup β just sugar and water β so you know exactly what's going into your glass. Fresh mint leaves are muddled gently to release their fragrance without turning bitter, and that restraint makes all the difference in the final sip. Poured over a mound of crushed ice and finished with a tucked-in mint sprig, the presentation alone is enough to make guests feel like they're sitting on a wraparound porch in July. The bourbon does the heavy lifting flavor-wise, mingling with the cool herbal notes for something that tastes far more complex than its short ingredient list suggests. A light dusting of powdered sugar on top is optional but adds a lovely finishing touch that makes the whole thing feel a little special.

Combine the granulated sugar and water in a small saucepan over medium heat, stirring until the sugar is fully dissolved, about 2β3 minutes. Remove from heat and let cool to room temperature. (The syrup can be made ahead and refrigerated for up to 2 weeks.)
Place the mint leaves in the bottom of a chilled julep cup or rocks glass. Add the simple syrup and muddle gently β press and twist the muddler 3β4 times just until the leaves are bruised and fragrant. Do not shred the leaves.
