Pat the halibut fillets dry with paper towels and season all over with 1/2 tsp of the salt.
Heat 2 tbsp of the olive oil in a 12-inch skillet over medium-high heat until shimmering. Add the halibut fillets and sear undisturbed for 3–4 minutes, until the underside is golden and releases easily from the pan. Flip and cook for 2–3 minutes more, until the fish reaches an internal temperature of 145°F (63°C) on an instant-read thermometer. Transfer to a plate and tent loosely with foil.
