Steamed whole fish is one of those dishes that looks impressive on the table but comes together with surprisingly little effort — just fresh aromatics, a clean technique, and good timing. The fish is seasoned simply with sea salt, then layered over ginger matchsticks and scallion lengths that perfume the flesh from below as it steams. A quick warm sauce of coconut aminos and julienned ginger gets finished with a pour of shimmering hot coconut oil, which sizzles dramatically over the fish the moment it hits the plate. That sizzle isn't just theater — it blooms the aromatics and pulls the whole dish together in seconds. Because every component here is straightforward and naturally sourced, there's no need to scan labels or worry about hidden additives sneaking into your meal. The result is silky, delicate fish with bright, savory flavor that tastes like something you'd order at a proper Cantonese restaurant. Serve it the moment it's plated, with steamed rice to soak up every last drop of that glossy sauce.

Fill a large wok or wide pot with 2 inches of water and set a steaming rack or heatproof plate stand inside. Bring the water to a rolling boil over high heat.
Pat the fish dry with paper towels and rub both sides and the cavity with the fine sea salt. Lay half the ginger matchsticks and half the scallion lengths inside the cavity and scatter the remaining ginger matchsticks and scallion lengths on a heatproof serving plate. Set the fish on top of the aromatics on the plate.
