There is something undeniably refreshing about a glass of lemonade made entirely from scratch, and this citrus version takes things up a notch with a fragrant mint simple syrup. Every ingredient here is whole and recognizable — fresh-squeezed lemon and orange juice, maple syrup, real mint leaves, and plain cold water — which is exactly what you want when you're being mindful about synthetic additives and preservatives that sneak into so many store-bought drinks and flavoring syrups. Parabens and other chemical preservatives have no business in your glass, and with this recipe, they simply aren't in the picture. The mint syrup comes together in minutes on the stovetop, steeping just long enough to pull out that cool, herbal fragrance before you strain it into the pitcher. The combination of lemon's bright tartness and orange's mellow sweetness makes for a drink that feels layered and intentional rather than one-note. Served over ice with a few citrus slices and a sprig of fresh mint, it looks as good as it tastes — and it's the kind of thing you'll want to keep a pitcher of in the fridge all week.

Combine the maple syrup and 1/2 cup water in a small saucepan over medium heat, stirring until the syrup is fully dissolved, about 2 minutes. Remove from heat.
Add the mint leaves to the warm syrup and press them gently with a muddler or the back of a wooden spoon until fragrant. Let the mint steep for 10 minutes, then strain out and discard the leaves.
