There is something deeply refreshing about a glass of lemonade made entirely from scratch, and this citrus version takes things up a notch with a homemade mint simple syrup that steeps right in the warm liquid for maximum flavor. Every ingredient here is whole and recognizable — fresh lemons, fresh orange juice, maple syrup, and real mint leaves — so you never have to second-guess what's actually in your glass. That matters more than people realize, since plenty of bottled lemonades and flavored drink mixes sneak in additives that have no business being there. The mint syrup comes together in minutes on the stovetop, and once it's strained and stirred into the citrus base, the result is bright, herbal, and just sweet enough without being cloying. A squeeze more lemon or a splash of extra water lets you dial in the balance exactly to your taste. Poured over ice with a few citrus slices and a sprig of fresh mint, it's the kind of drink that looks as good as it tastes — and you made it with nothing but real food.

Combine the maple syrup and 1/2 cup water in a small saucepan over medium heat, stirring until the syrup is fully dissolved, about 2 minutes. Remove from heat.
Add the mint leaves to the warm syrup and press them gently with a muddler or the back of a wooden spoon until fragrant. Let the mint steep for 10 minutes, then strain out and discard the leaves.
