Heat the oven to 450°F (230°C). Pat the roast dry with paper towels and rub it all over with the olive oil. In a small bowl, stir together the salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, and dried thyme, then press the mixture evenly over all sides of the roast.
Set a wire rack inside the roasting pan and place the seasoned roast on the rack. Roast at 450°F (230°C) for 15 minutes to develop a crust, then reduce the oven temperature to 325°F (165°C) and continue roasting until an instant-read thermometer inserted into the thickest part reads 130–135°F (54–57°C) for medium-rare, about 45–55 minutes more.
