Deep purple and richly aromatic, this elderberry tonic syrup is the kind of thing you'll want to keep stocked in your fridge all season long. Dried elderberries are simmered low and slow with fresh ginger, ground turmeric, Ceylon cinnamon, and whole cloves until the liquid reduces into something intensely flavorful and beautifully complex. Raw honey is stirred in off the heat to preserve its natural qualities, giving the finished syrup a smooth, rounded sweetness that balances the tartness of the berries perfectly. The whole process is straightforward ā just a saucepan, a strainer, and a little patience while the kitchen fills with the most incredible spiced fragrance. Every single ingredient here is naturally free from grain-based additives, so there's no need to scrutinize labels or worry about hidden fillers the way you might with store-bought wellness syrups. The finished syrup thickens slightly as it chills, turning into a glossy, spoonable elixir that's as satisfying to make as it is to use. A jar of this in the refrigerator feels like a small act of self-care you'll be glad you made time for.

Combine the dried elderberries, water, ginger, turmeric, Ceylon cinnamon stick, and cloves in a medium saucepan. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat, then reduce the heat to medium-low and simmer, uncovered, for 40ā45 minutes, until the liquid has reduced by roughly half and the berries are very soft and have released their deep purple color.
Remove the saucepan from the heat. Use a potato masher or the back of a wooden spoon to press the berries firmly against the side of the pan, extracting as much juice as possible.
