Combine the black lentils and kidney beans in a large bowl and cover with 4 cups of cold water. Soak for at least 8 hours or overnight, then drain and rinse through a fine-mesh strainer.
Transfer the drained lentils and beans to a large heavy-bottomed pot or Dutch oven. Add 5 cups of fresh water and 1 tsp salt. Bring to a boil over high heat, skimming any foam that rises to the surface, then reduce the heat to medium-low, cover, and cook for 45–60 minutes, until the lentils are completely tender and the kidney beans yield easily when pressed between two fingers.
