Dried black pepper can sometimes contain mold toxins, but the trace amount used here is so small that it is likely tolerated by many. Pour about 1 inch of water into a large pot or saucepan and set a steamer basket inside. Bring the water to a boil over high heat.
Add the broccoli florets to the steamer basket in a single layer, cover with the lid, and steam for 4 to 6 minutes, until the florets are bright green and a fork slides into the thickest stem with just slight resistance.
