Bright, tart, and genuinely refreshing, this from-scratch lemonade is the kind of drink that makes a hot afternoon feel like a celebration. Most store-bought lemonades and powdered mixes sneak in high fructose corn syrup as a sweetener, which means checking labels becomes a whole project just to enjoy a simple glass. Here, the sweetness comes entirely from a quick homemade simple syrup made with plain granulated sugar and water — nothing more, nothing less. Fresh-squeezed lemon juice is the real star, giving you that bright citrus punch you just can't get from a bottle. The whole thing comes together in a single pitcher, and you can easily dial the sweetness or tartness up or down to suit your taste. Served over ice with a few lemon slices and a sprig of mint, it looks as good as it tastes.

Combine the sugar and 1 cup water in a small saucepan over medium heat, stirring until the sugar is fully dissolved, about 3–4 minutes. Remove from heat and let the syrup cool for 15 minutes.
While the syrup cools, juice the lemons and strain the juice through a fine-mesh strainer into a pitcher to remove seeds and pulp.
