Few drinks are as refreshing as this half-and-half blend of iced tea and fresh lemonade — it's bright, lightly sweet, and endlessly drinkable on a warm day. Managing a nickel allergy means being cautious about a surprising range of foods and drinks, but this recipe keeps things beautifully simple with just a handful of clean, low-nickel ingredients. Black tea, fresh lemon juice, sugar, and water are all you need, so there's no reaching for canned or packaged beverages that might introduce unwanted ingredients. Squeezing your own lemons and brewing the tea from scratch also means you stay in full control of everything that goes into the pitcher. The homemade simple syrup comes together in just a few minutes and lets you dial the sweetness exactly where you want it, while the lemonade side stays gloriously tart and bright. Poured over ice with a sprig of mint and a lemon slice, this is the kind of drink that looks like it came from a café but costs almost nothing to make at home.

Bring 2 cups of water to a boil in a medium saucepan. Remove from heat, add the 4 tea bags, and steep for 5 minutes. Remove and discard the tea bags without squeezing them, then stir in the remaining 2 cups of cold water. Set aside to cool to room temperature, about 20 minutes.
While the tea cools, combine the sugar and 1/2 cup water in the saucepan over medium heat, stirring until the sugar is fully dissolved and the syrup is clear, about 2–3 minutes. Remove from heat and let cool for 5 minutes.
