Warm, fragrant, and deeply comforting, this homemade applesauce is the kind of simple recipe that earns a permanent spot in your rotation. A blend of tart Granny Smith and sweet Honeycrisp apples creates a beautifully balanced flavor that no store-bought jar can quite match. For anyone managing a nickel sensitivity, apples are a low-nickel fruit, making this an easy and genuinely satisfying option to reach for without second-guessing the ingredient list. The short lineup — just apples, lemon juice, a little sugar, cinnamon, and salt — keeps things clean and completely in your control. Everything simmers together in one saucepan until the apples collapse into a silky, spoonable sauce, and you can mash it as smooth or as chunky as you like. Serve it warm alongside a cozy dinner, spoon it over oatmeal, or eat it straight from the jar — honestly, all three are valid choices.

Combine the apple chunks, water, lemon juice, sugar, cinnamon, and salt in a large saucepan. Stir to coat the apples evenly.
Bring the mixture to a boil over medium-high heat, then reduce the heat to medium-low, cover, and cook for 18–22 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the apples are completely tender and collapse easily when pressed with a spoon.
