Eating well while breastfeeding can feel like a full-time job on top of, well, the actual full-time job of feeding a newborn. This hearty grain-and-legume bowl delivers a serious nutritional punch — protein-rich lentils, fiber-packed bulgur, and healthy fats from olive oil and optional avocado all in one satisfying meal. The turmeric and cumin simmered into the lentils add warmth and depth without any heat, making this gentle enough for sensitive postpartum digestion. A bright lime-and-garlic dressing ties everything together, and the fresh cilantro, cherry tomatoes, and scallion greens keep it feeling light and vibrant rather than heavy. It comes together in about the time it takes to get a baby down for a nap, with both the lentils and bulgur cooking mostly hands-off. You can serve it warm straight from the pot or let it cool and pack it for later — it holds up beautifully either way. Sliced avocado on top adds creaminess and extra good fats, which makes this bowl feel genuinely nourishing rather than just functional.

Combine the rinsed lentils, 2½ cups water, turmeric, cumin, and ½ tsp salt in a medium saucepan. Bring to a boil over high heat, then reduce to a gentle simmer and cook, uncovered, until the lentils are tender but still hold their shape, 20–25 minutes. Drain any excess water through a fine-mesh strainer and set aside.
While the lentils cook, bring 1¾ cups water and ¼ tsp salt to a boil in a small saucepan. Stir in the bulgur, cover tightly, and remove from heat. Let stand until the water is fully absorbed and the bulgur is tender with a slight chew, about 15 minutes. Fluff with a fork.
