Brazil's national cocktail is one of those drinks that tastes like it took serious skill to make, but comes together in minutes with just four ingredients. Fresh lime wedges get muddled with granulated sugar until the juice flows freely and the sugar dissolves into something almost syrupy, then crushed ice and cachaça bring it all together into a bracingly tart, slightly sweet sip. Since the whole drink is built on fruit, cane spirit, and sugar, there's nothing here that sneaks in cream, butter, or any other dairy — it's naturally free of all that without any substitutions required. Cachaça, distilled from fresh sugarcane juice, gives this cocktail a grassy, funky depth that sets it apart from a standard rum drink and makes every sip feel genuinely interesting. The muddling step is where the magic happens, so don't rush it — you want every bit of juice and essential oil coaxed out of those lime wedges before the ice goes in. It's the kind of cocktail that works just as well at a backyard cookout as it does at a dinner party, and once you've made one, you'll wonder why you ever ordered anything else.
