There is something deeply satisfying about a loaf of white bread made entirely from scratch, especially when you know exactly what went into it. This recipe keeps things beautifully simple — warm water, butter, sugar, salt, bread flour, and yeast — with no additives, preservatives, or mystery ingredients that can aggravate a sensitive digestive system. Store-bought bread is often loaded with emulsifiers, dough conditioners, and other extras that can be hard on the gut, so baking your own is a genuinely smart swap. The bread machine does all the heavy lifting, mixing and proofing and baking the loaf through a single hands-off cycle while you go about your day. Letting the finished loaf cool fully on a wire rack before slicing is a small but important step — it allows the crumb to set properly, making each slice easier to digest and far less gummy. The result is a soft, golden loaf with a tender interior that pairs well with just about anything, from a simple smear of butter to a hearty sandwich filling.

Add the ingredients to the bread machine pan in the order listed: water, butter, sugar, salt, bread flour, and yeast. Make a small well in the center of the flour and pour the yeast into it, keeping the yeast away from the salt.
Insert the pan into the bread machine, select the Basic or White Bread cycle, choose your preferred crust color (medium is recommended), and press Start. The full cycle will run approximately 3 hours.
