Store-bought sandwich bread is one of those sneaky sources of artificial dyes, with some brands using colorants to achieve that perfectly golden crust or uniform crumb. This homemade loaf skips all of that entirely — every ingredient on the list is exactly what it sounds like, from bread flour and butter to a packet of yeast. The bread machine does the heavy lifting, mixing and proofing and baking while you go about your day, so there's no kneading or guesswork involved. What comes out is a beautifully risen, golden-brown loaf with a soft, pillowy crumb that puts the grocery store version to shame. Letting it cool on a wire rack before slicing is the one rule worth following — it keeps the texture light and airy rather than gummy. Whether you're toasting it for breakfast or building a classic sandwich, this is the kind of simple, clean bread that earns a permanent spot in your weekly routine.

Add the ingredients to the bread machine pan in the order listed: water, butter, sugar, salt, bread flour, and yeast. Make a small well in the center of the flour and pour the yeast into it, keeping the yeast away from the salt.
Insert the pan into the bread machine, select the Basic or White Bread cycle, choose your preferred crust color (medium is recommended), and press Start. The full cycle will run approximately 3 hours.
