There's something deeply satisfying about a loaf that does all the work for you — this one lets the machine handle the kneading, rising, and baking while you just measure, pour, and walk away. Warm water and active dry yeast wake up against soft butter and a touch of sugar, building a dough that turns tender and elastic as the bread flour comes together into a smooth, pillowy loaf. The Basic cycle bakes it into a deep golden crust with a hollow-sounding thump on the bottom, and the crumb underneath stays soft and pull-apart tender once it's had time to cool. It's a great everyday loaf to bake on repeat, and it fits neatly into a lower-sodium kitchen without sacrificing that classic homemade bread flavor. Slice it thick for sandwiches or toast it up with a smear of butter — either way, it's the kind of bread that makes the whole house smell incredible.

Add the ingredients to the bread machine pan in the order listed: water, butter, sugar, salt, bread flour, and yeast. Make a small well in the center of the flour and pour the yeast into it, keeping the yeast away from the salt.
Insert the pan into the bread machine, select the Basic or White Bread cycle, choose your preferred crust color (medium is recommended), and press Start. The full cycle will run approximately 3 hours.
