Soft, golden dinner rolls fresh from the oven are one of those simple pleasures that feel almost impossible to replicate at home — until now. The bread machine does the heavy lifting on kneading and the first rise, so you can walk away and come back to perfectly developed dough without breaking a sweat. What makes this recipe especially reassuring is how clean the ingredient list is: just flour, water, butter, egg, sugar, salt, and yeast. No packaged mixes, no store-bought dough, and absolutely none of the sweeteners that sneak into commercial rolls and baked goods. That matters more than most people realize, since high fructose corn syrup turns up in a surprising number of grocery store breads and rolls. A final brush of melted butter straight out of the oven gives these rolls a glossy, rich finish that makes them nearly impossible to resist. Pull them apart while they're still warm and you'll understand why homemade always wins.

Add the ingredients to the bread machine pan in the order recommended by your machine's manufacturer — typically liquids first. Add the warm water, softened butter, and egg, then add the flour, sugar, and salt. Make a small well in the center of the flour and add the yeast. Select the Dough cycle and press Start.
When the Dough cycle completes (typically 90 minutes, including kneading and the first rise), the dough should be smooth, slightly tacky, and roughly doubled in size. Lightly grease a 9x13-inch baking dish.
