Soft, pillowy dinner rolls fresh from the oven are one of those simple pleasures that make any meal feel like a special occasion. These come together with a short list of everyday pantry staples — flour, butter, egg, sugar, yeast, and salt — so there's nothing hidden or unexpected lurking in the ingredient list. The bread machine does all the heavy lifting for the dough, handling the kneading and first rise while you go about your day. Once the dough cycle finishes, you shape the rolls by hand, let them puff up until they're just touching in the pan, and bake them to a deep golden brown. A final brush of melted butter right out of the oven gives each roll a glossy, irresistible finish. Whether you're serving them alongside a weeknight roast or piling them on the table for a holiday spread, these rolls deliver that bakery-style softness without any of the store-bought guesswork.

Add the ingredients to the bread machine pan in the order recommended by your machine's manufacturer — typically liquids first. Add the warm water, softened butter, and egg, then add the flour, sugar, and salt. Make a small well in the center of the flour and add the yeast. Select the Dough cycle and press Start.
When the Dough cycle completes (typically 90 minutes, including kneading and the first rise), the dough should be smooth, slightly tacky, and roughly doubled in size. Lightly grease a 9x13-inch baking dish.
