Warm spiced apples wrapped in shatteringly crisp, golden phyllo — this classic pastry is the kind of dessert that makes a whole kitchen smell incredible. Avoiding BHA and BHT can be trickier than it sounds with baked goods, since many store-bought pastries and pre-made fillings sneak in these synthetic preservatives to extend shelf life. Here, every ingredient is straightforward and easy to verify: real butter, fresh apples, granulated sugar, and Ceylon cinnamon are the stars, with no need for anything processed or shelf-stabilized. The breadcrumbs tucked beneath the filling are a traditional trick that absorbs excess moisture and keeps the phyllo from going soggy — it's a small step that makes a big difference in texture. Rolling the layered, buttered phyllo into a tight log is easier than it looks, especially with a kitchen towel to guide you. Once it comes out of the oven deep golden and crackling, a light dusting of powdered sugar is all it needs to look completely stunning on the table.

Melt 1 tbsp butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the sliced apples, granulated sugar, and Ceylon cinnamon, and cook, stirring occasionally, until the apples are just softened and the sugar has dissolved into a light syrup, about 6–8 minutes. Remove from heat and let cool for 5 minutes.
