McDonald’s gluten policy:
Many McDonald’s are thought to use a separate fryer for their french fries and hash browns. Always confirm with restaurant staff before ordering. McDonald’s french fries and hash browns contain hydrolyzed wheat; however, it is thought that the gluten content of hydrolyzed wheat is very minimal.
From McDonald’s: “McDonald’s currently doesn’t certify any menu items as gluten-free. We encourage you to check the ingredients information for individual menu items. However, despite taking precautions, normal kitchen operations may involve some shared cooking and preparation areas, equipment and utensils, and the possibility exists for your food items to come in contact with other food products, including some that may contain gluten.”
McDonald’s allergen policy:
“As part of our commitment to you, we provide the most current ingredient information available from our food suppliers for the eight most common allergens as identified by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (eggs, dairy, wheat, soy, peanuts, tree nuts, fish and shellfish), so that our guests with food allergies can make informed food selections. However, we also want you to know that despite taking precautions, normal kitchen operations may involve some shared cooking and preparation areas, equipment and utensils, and the possibility exists for your food items to come in contact with other food products, including allergens.”
McDonald’s vegan / vegetarian information:
McDonald’s does not provide a vegan menu or any information for vegans. They have been testing a McPlant burger in several restaurants across the USA.
McDonald’s does have this statement for vegetarians: “Although we don’t have a vegetarian menu, we do offer options without meat, including our Fruit & Maple Oatmeal. We’re also happy to make any of our breakfast sandwiches for you without meat—just ask.”
Other helpful hints:
- McDonald’s sometimes adds butter to buns and their grills. If you avoid dairy, always specify no butter when placing your order and ask about cross-contamination issues with butter on the grill.
How to use Fig restaurants:
- Fig shows you menu items that likely fit your Fig based on publicly available restaurant-reported ingredients and allergens. If a menu item says “please read note,” click the menu item to understand why the item may or may not fit your Fig.
- Fig does not yet take cross-contamination into account. Please always confirm ingredient and allergen information with the restaurant, and always work with the restaurant manager and staff to determine if a menu item is appropriate for you. Restaurants regularly change ingredients, allergen information, procedures, food sourcing and management.
- Fig restaurants is still an early feature, and your feedback helps us make it better. If you have any ideas for us, please send them to support@foodisgood.com. We’ll also be sending you a few surveys as you use it!
