Figs and wasps share a unique symbiotic relationship: Wasps sometimes lay their eggs inside fig fruits, and when the eggs hatch, the new wasps spread the fig's pollen to other fig trees. Unfortunately, the mother wasp dies inside the original fig when laying her eggs. Some vegans choose to avoid figs for this reason; however, the majority of vegans do not see this natural process as animal exploitation or cruelty. Many figs sold in the US are also self-pollinating and thus do not contain wasp remains.
