Unfortunately, the mother wasp dies inside the original fig when laying her eggs. Some vegans choose to avoid figs for this reason; however, the majority of vegans do not see this natural process as animal exploitation or cruelty. Many figs sold in the US are also self-pollinating and thus do not contain wasp remains.
