Is erythritol low FODMAP?

Erythritol has not been tested for FODMAPs and may be high or low FODMAP. However, it is generally well absorbed in the gut and does not cause issues for many IBS patients. If you're just getting started on the Low FODMAP diet, you may want to avoid it during the elimination phase. Erythritol should be especially avoided during the FODMAP challenge phase for fructose, since it is thought to interfere with fructose absorption. Always test tolerance of untested foods like erythritol in small portions and only when your symptoms are fully settled. Possible FODMAPs: Mannitol, Sorbitol

New to a Low FODMAP diet?

If you're just getting started, we highly recommend our guide to the Low FODMAP diet written by Monash-trained dietitian Kate Watson. This is important as you assess if ingredients like erythritol are IBS friendly. Many ingredients are low or high FODMAP based on serving size and preparation.

Since the diet is difficult to follow, we recommend working with a FODMAP-trained dietitian. A dietitian can help you understand the diet and your unique needs.
